SAMBA INSTRUMENTS - SURDOS
Samba bass drum. The Samba band generally uses three sizes.
The sizes we offer range from 14 inch to 26 inch diameter. Heights are
either 50, 55 or 60 cm. The shells are made from aluminium, and in wood.
We list three main brands here, Gope, Contemporânea & Bauer;
all are used extensively in Brasil and are ideal for processions.

Gope Short Short 50cm Surdos
Light, durable and tough, found in bands all over Brasil and
the rest of the world. Schools and younger players find the short
50cm surdos lighter and less tough on the legs without significantly
affecting depth of tone and volume produced.

SURDO CONTEMPORÂNEA AXÉ COMPACT
ALUMINIUM
|
|

| A smaller range of Surdos which were
originally designed for the great Samba Reggae displays of Salvador
De Bahia. These were exuberant, and the larger-sized drums (18"
plus) are thrown up in the air as part of the music as played
during Carnaval. The smaller compact Surdos make ideal drums for
smaller and younger players. They are beautifully made by Contemporânea. |

SURDO RMV
|
|
|
|
| RMV are known throughout Brasil as a maker of
well made instruments with a great sound. The Surdos use a slightly
different tuning system to other surdos, which makes them very
stable. The drum heads are used by many other manufacturers.

ZABUMBA
|
|
|
|
| The Zabumba is a double ended Bass drum constructed
in a similar way to the surdo, but much thinner. They are easy
to march with and have a great low sound. If you put a Napa head
on one end, and a plastic head on the other, then you will have
two distinctive tones which makes the drum really versatile.

SURDO BEATER AND STRAPS
|
|
|
|
| There are may different styles of Surdo beaters,
from plain wood to very soft puff mallets. The longer beaters
are generally used for the bigger drums, the short beaters are
often used in pairs to play the more complicated and faster mid-drum
(cortador) patterns. Most players prefer a slightly harder but
padded beater. The olodum style was developed for Samba Reggae,
but works well with most styles of brasilian music
